Ms. Burns operates her own government relations firm that provides lobbying and consulting services. Since it’s creation in 2003, Ms. Burns’ client list has included Americans for Limited Government, Arizona Cable & Telecommunications Association, Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Heart Hospital, Arizona Film & Media Coalition, Arizona Production Capital, Better Arizona.Org, Cendant, Chevron, Friedman Foundation, Luke Preservation Trust, McLane Company, Tucson Heart Hospital, and Unocal.*
Prior to establishing her own firm, Ms. Burns spent eight years as an Arizona State Senator where she was elected the first woman President of the Arizona Senate by her peers. Specific responsibilities included the successful passage, implementation and governor approval of the state's $6 billion budget; presiding over and managing general sessions; setting up the senate bipartisan committee structure; appointing committee chairpersons; setting committee meeting schedules, organizing floor actions and caucuses; working with caucus and other leaders to develop a majority program; and negotiating with house leaders and the Governor of Arizona to develop policy for senate consideration and decision/vote. In 2002, she was awarded “Senator of the Year” by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce.
Before serving as Arizona State Senator, Ms. Burns was an Arizona Representative from 1987-1995. From 1993-1994, she was elected by her peers as the first woman in Arizona to hold the position of Majority Leader where she was responsible for coalescing support to ensure critical legislation passed and for policy development and management. She was also the advocate for caucus members’ legislation, managed bill and issue progression through the house and senate, and recommended bill movement and timing. Furthermore, she was solicited for support for important issues by other elected officials, interacted with court systems and private and public sector lobbyists, and developed and executed strategic plans to implement legislation.
Ms. Burns professional affiliations have included the American Legislative Exchange Council (Board member through 2002 and National Chairman in 1999), the Council of State Governments, Senate President’s Forum, PREHAB’s Faith House (Domestic Violence Shelter), the West Valley Child Crisis Center, and the National Italian American Foundation.
